Romanian fencer Ana-Maria Popescu (former Branza) won on Sunday the Epee Grand Prix Doha 2017 (Qatar), after defeating in the final Italian Mara Navarria, 10-6, according to the Website of the Romanian Fencing Federation.
Her success came after one year and two months since the athlete's last podium with CSA Steaua, when she conquered the gold medal in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, alongside Romania's fencing team.
Ana-Maria Popescu on Saturday played in the qualifications round and on Sunday the athlete trained by Dan Podeanu and George Epurescu defeated Beate Christmann (Germany) in the first round of the competition, 12-7, while in the 2nd round she defeated Russian Tatiana Gudkova, 15-7, in the round of sixteen she defeated Italian Rossella Fiamingo, in the quarterfinals she defeated Russian Tatiana Andriusha, in the semifinals she defeated Chinese Hou Guangjuan, 15-9, and in the final she defeated Mara Navarria.
