Romania's David Popovici swam to gold on Saturday in the men's 100m freestyle final of the European Aquatics Championships in Rome, clocking 46.86 seconds to set a new world record.

Hungary's Kristof Milak won the silver with 47.47 seconds, and Italian swimmer Alessandro Miressi took home the bronze with 47.63 seconds.

17-year-old Popovici, 100m and 200m freestyle world champion, had already smashed a European record on Friday, in the 100m semi-finals, with a time of 46.98 seconds.

The old world record in this event belonged to Brazilian sprint specialist Cesar Cielo Filho - 46.91 seconds, and dated since 2009.

Popovici thus holds a whopping set of senior and junior European and world records in the men's 100m freestyle, as well as the competition record.

David Popovici is the second Romanian to win a European title in a men's event, after Robert Glinta, who took home the gold in 2021, in Budapest, in the 100m backstroke.

Popovici will also swim the 200m and 400m freestyle, as well as the 4x100m freestyle relay at the Rome European Aquatics Championships.

Romania is represented by a delegation of 11 athletes led by double world champion David Popovici. The Romanian athletes will participate in swimming, diving and high diving events. AGERPRES (RO - editor: Mihai Tenea; EN - editor: Simona Klodnischi)
