The Romanian Waters National Administration (ANAR) is celebrating today, June 29, Danube Day noting that over 80 million people living in the Danube basin area enjoy the natural resources offered by the river, according to a press statement from the administration.

"Water is vital to a nation's development. Therefore, well-managed water speaks to the way a nation has behaved toward water throughout its history and, at the same time, makes it responsible now and in the future to conduct an appropriate policy that comprises the conservation and protection of water resources, under sustainable water management policies. The hydrological events we have lately experienced in Romania remind us that the water resource is distributed unevenly and limited. That is why people should understand that water is not an inexhaustible resource," says Ervin Molnar, director general of ANAR.

ANAR is currently carrying out the "Danube Floodplain" and "Naiad" projects under which sustainable development solutions are proposed. The projects regard a change the use of agricultural land to secure a gravitational discharge of small tributaries of the Danube without pumping water over dams, and, on the other hand, a relocation of dams. The solutions will be included in the Flood Risk Management Plan for the Danube River.

"Today, people need to know that watercourses bring benefits, and lifestyles need to adjust for living in such areas. In our country, the people of the Delta know that. They are an example to many. Moreover, there are people who have learned, throughout their lives, to behave responsibly towards water. For example, the great rowing champion Ivan Patzaichin is an example and, because of the value he brings to the Romanian nation, the administration has concluded a partnership to develop public education and information projects," according to the ANAR statement.

ANAR mentions that this year's theme chosen by the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River is "Discover the Danube." Due to this year's floods, but also to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic ANAR has limited this year' s actions to an online event called "Discover the Danube."

The event takes over the Danube Art Master model organised since 2011 by the International Danube Commission. "Discover the Danube" is an online event dedicated to children and parents alike and involves encouraging them to get closer to nature and create a landscape of natural elements found on the spot next to a watercourse. The final outcomes will be photographed and the pictures submitted to biroupresaapeleromane20@gmail.com until the last day of the school holiday, following which the participating classes/schools will be rewarded. In participating in this event, ANAR intends to develop partnerships, including with media organisations (Radio Romania Actualitati, AGERPRES, TVR1) to provide support for promoting this event throughout summer.
