Bucharest, Mar 9 /Agerpres/ - Those with an important role in Justice must respect the Constitution, said, on Saturday, the chairman of the Senate, Calin Popescu Tariceanu, when asked to comment on the positive appreciations of the President of the European Parliament regarding Laura Codruta Kovesi.
"I agree that women (...) must play a more and more important role and they are playing a more and more important role, in all segments of society, but those who are playing this important role, and especially in Justice, must do so with respect for the Constitution and the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens. These are the values at the base of the formation, the creation of the European Union, and on the basis of these values we have acceded to the European Union. Those who have no respect for these values and believe that Justice can be done as in the communist period, with the Securitate [e.n. - Romania's communist-era secret police] and the prosecutors; then that is where we part, whoever that person is," said Tariceanu.
The President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, relayed on Friday to George Ciamba, the Romanian Minister for European Affairs and President-in-office of the Council of the European Union, the official letter by which he announces the latter that Laura Codruta Kovesi is the EP's candidate for the position of European Chief Prosecutor and, furthermore, he communicated the composition of the negotiation team of the European Parliament in the future discussions with the Council.
Tajani announced the sending of the letter on Twitter, also posting the contents on his official EP President account.
"Laura Codruta Kövesi is @Europarl_EN candidate for European Public Prosecutor Office. She has all the qualities required to do a great job. We need more exemplary women like her in leadership positions," read the post on the @EP_President handle on Twitter.
