Romania leads Canada 2-0 in the Fed Cup World Group II first-round tie, after Irina Begu (WTA's 37th) clinched the victory against Bianca Andreescu 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2 (173 WTA) in the second rubber of the day played at the Cluj Napoca Multipurpose Hall.
Despite a weaker serve than her usual, Irina Begu compensated with higher resilience that showed particularly in the first set when she was led 15-40, but managed to turn the tables on the opponent's serve and win the break after a 7-minute game. Begu claimed the first set in 41 minutes.
Andreescu rebounded from the loss to take the second set by tiebreak, but in the decider Begu was in control winning the games 3-0, 4-1 and 5-2 and taking the set 6-2. During the two hour 38-minute match Begu made 42 unforced errors as to 38 - Bianca Andreescu.
In the first match of the day, Romanian 27-year-old Cirstea (WTA No. 38) defeated Canada's 22-year-old Carol Zhao (No. 138) 6-2, 6-2.
Zhao will play Begu in the third rubber on Sunday, as of noon, while Andreescu will play Cirstea later in the day.
The pairings Ana Bogdan/Raluca Olaru, Katherina Sebov/Gabriela Dabrowski will battle in the doubles, but changes could occur depending on the results.
At the last Fed Cup meeting between Romania and Canada, which took place in Montreal in 2015, Romania won 3-2 and booked their ticket into the elite World Group. The Canadian team is currently ranked 15th in the world, while Romania is ranked 12th. The winner of this encounter will qualify for the World Group II play-offs in April 2018.
