The number of individuals in arrears of over 30 days with the banks and non-bank financial institutions decreased by 0.39% in November, compared to the previous month, down to 666,381, according to the most recent data of the National Bank of Romania (BNR).
These persons had arrears of over 7.69 billion lei. Most of the amount was in lei and euro, respectively 3.07 billion in lei and the equivalent of 3.17 billion lei in euro. Depending on the delay category, the highest value corresponds to the term of over 90 days, with 4.51 billion lei.
The rate of non-performing loans fell down to 7.31% in November, by 0.33 percentage points versus the previous month, and by 2.59 percentage point respectively, compared to the similar month of 2016.
Liviu Voinea, BNR Deputy Governor, said at the beginning of last year that the Central Bank has proposed a 6% target for non-performing loans this year.
"Non-performing loans have continued to decline. This year we have the target of 6% with non-performing loans, which means that we want to reach the European average, but we are, in exchange, above the European average in terms of the provisioning of these loans. From the budget perspective, Romania should not use public money for the banking sector these years, starting in 2009," Voinea said.
