Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu paid an official visit to Belarus on Thursday and Friday, occasion on which he talked with his counterpart Vladimir Makei. The discussions agenda featured the prospects of the bilateral relations regarding "the dialogue at the foreign ministries level, commercial exchanges, economic ties, legal framework, parliamentary contacts and projects in the culture, education, people-to-people areas, as well as at the academia level."

According to a release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE), the two foreign affairs ministers attended an event dedicated to the 25th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Romania and Belarus (14 February 1992).

"On this anniversary occasion, a common philatelic issuance was launched with representations of painters Corneliu Baba and Mihail Savitski, as well as a poetry volume of the great poet, Mihai Eminescu, translated into Belarusian. Furthermore, young artists of Belarus performed works of great Romanian composers, such as: George Enescu, Tiberiu Brediceanu, Constantin Dumitrescu and Grigoras Dinicu," the quoted source mentions.

The two ministers also talked about the prospects of the European Union — the Republic of Belarus relations, in the context of the Eastern Partnership Summit in November 2017, but also about Romania-Belarus cooperation on a multilateral format, including at the United Nations level, regional issues and other shared interest topics.

"Minister Teodor Melescanu revealed that Romania encouraged and will continue to encourage the development of dialogue and cooperation between the EU and the Republic of Belarus, hailing the results of recent openness in the bilateral relations and endorsing the preservation of Belarus' commitment for strengthening the process of domestic reform and human rights. Romania reiterated the offer to share, in any forme considered useful by the Belarusian part, the experience of our country's transition in terms of reforms, gathered over 25 years," the release reads.

In this context, the head of the Romanian diplomacy also had other meetings, namely with Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov, Chairman of the Republic of Belarus Council Mikhail Vladimirovich Myasnikovich, and Speaker of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Andreychenko, according to the MAE release. The visit marks the upward trend of the bilateral relations over recent years, amid positive developments in the EU-Belarus relations, in which Romania played an important role.
