Bucharest, Oct 16 Agerpres / - Romania's Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu attended an informal meeting with the foreign ministers of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary and Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia in London on Sunday, at the invitation of his British counterpart Boris Johnson.

Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) informs in a press statement that the meeting provided an opportunity for an exchange of views on current affairs regarding European and international security. Addressed at the meeting were the latest developments in the implementation of the Warsaw NATO Summit decisions, regional security developments (Western Balkans, Eastern Neighborhood, including the Black Sea), the Iranian nuclear file and the situation in the Korean Peninsula.

"There has been general support for deepening the EU-NATO relationship, ensuring European security, joint management of security threats on the eastern flank and strengthening the resilience of states in the region," according to MAE.

At the same time, Melescanu stressed the importance of the strategic partnership with the UK, the high degree of convergence between the foreign and security policy positions of Romania and the UK, with the latter having one of the most important military alliance presence in the Black Sea region as far as all categories of weapons are concerned.

Melescanu also reiterated the interest of Romania in further developing its own strategic partnership with the UK fully coherent and consistent with the desire to maintain European unity and support the future ambitions of the EU to strengthen the security and defence dimension.

The meeting did not intend to discuss issues related to the Brexit case, for which there is a special framework for negotiations, and EU member states have entrusted a clear negotiating mandate to chief negotiator Michel Barnier, said MAE.
