NATO PA brings to Bucharest over 50 national delegations; Jens Stoltenberg - attending plenary session

NATO Parliamentary Assembly will gather in Bucharest, Friday through Monday, over 50 national delegations, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is going to be present at the plenary session on Monday, together with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and the chairs of the two Parliament Chambers, Calin Popescu-Tariceanu and Liviu Dragnea.

The Assembly, in its 63rd annual session, will be carried out at the Palace of Parliament. Over 50 national parliamentary delegations of the member states and of the states with associate, associated regional and Mediterranean partner and observer statute, as well as guests from Romania and abroad will participate in the event.

The discussions will focus on topical issues on international security, the specialist committees going to adopt several reports which were debated on occasion of the spring session which took place in Tbilisi, Georgia, this year.

The five specialist committees — the political committee, the defence and security committee, the committee on science and technology, the committee on the civil dimension of security and the committee on economy and security — will debate a series of reports on security and defence matters, the specific topics going to be discussed with the representatives of the governments of the member states, the academic world, civil society and NATO representatives.

Among the topics to be approached there are the support for NATO's actions in Afghanistan, the closer NATO — EU cooperation, the stability and security in the Black Sea area, the risks of the instability in Eastern Asia, the humanitarian crisis in Syria and Iraq.

Delivering speeches to the opening of the plenary session on Monday, presided by NATO PA President Paolo Alli, will be Romania's President Klaus Iohannis, Senate President Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, Deputies' Chamber Speaker Liviu Dragnea, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. On this occasion, the Assembly's draft budget for 2018 will be presented and voted on, elections for some leadership positions will take place and the resolutions of the specialist committees will be debated and voted on.
