Tennis: Horia Tecau qualifies for US Open mixed doubles semifinals

The pair made of the Romanian tennis player Horia Tecau and the US player CoCo Vandeweghe has qualified for the semifinals of the mixed doubles event of the US Open tennis tournament, the last Grand Slam of the year, on Tuesday, in New York, after defeating the pair made up of Bruno Soares (Brazil)/Timea Babos (Hungary), 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.

Tecau and Vandeweghe defeated the seeds no. 4 in one hour and 6 minutes and secured a cheque worth 30,000 US dollars for reaching this far in the competition.

At last year's edition, Coco Vandeweghe played the mixed doubles finals at the same tournament alongside his compatriot Rajeev Ram.

Also last year, Tecau and Vandeweghe lost together the mixed doubles final at the Australian Open. Horia holds one titles won in a doubles mixed event of a Grand Slam competition, which he obtained in 2012 at the Australian Open, alongside another American player, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, and he also played a mixed doubles final alongside Indian Sania Mirza at Melbourne.

In the semifinals of the US open that will take place on the Flushing Meadows arenas in New York, Tecau and Vandeweghe will meet the main seeds, namely Martina Hingis (Switzerland) and Jamie Murray (UK), who defeated, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8, the pair Abigail Spears (US)/Juan Sebastian Cabal (Columbia) in the quarterfinals.

Tecau has also qualified for the men's doubles event, playing alongside Dutch Jean-Julien Rojer, after defeating the pairing made up of Jamie Murray (UK)/Bruno Soares (Brazil), 6-1, 6-2.
