Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world number two, has eased past Czech Barbora Strycova 6-1 6-0 into the quarter-finals of the 2,434,389 USD WTA Rogers Cup tournament in Toronto.

Second-seeded Halep, 25, the defending champion, only needed 59 minutes to win the meeting with 31-year-old Strycova, world number 26.

Halep leads Strycova 4-1 in their head-to-head count, as she had already defeated her this year in Stuttgart 6-2 6-3.

Halep won 58,185 US dollars and 190 WTA singles points, and in the quarter-finals she will play France's Caroline Garcia, 23, world number 21, who defeated Catherine Bellis (USA) 6-4 6-2 in the third round. Halep won the only head-to-head meeting, in the Sydeny R16 6-4 2-6 6-1.

In the 2016 Rogers Cup women's singles final, hosted by Montreal, Halep defeated American Madison Keys 7-6 (2) 6-3, and in the 2015 edition again in Toronto, she retired in the final versus Belinda Bencic at 7-6 (5) 6-7 (4) 3-0 for the Swiss. In the 2013 edition, Romanian Sorana Cirstea was defeated in the final by Serena Williams 6-2 6-0.
