Romania's Halep advances to WTA Rogers Cup women's singles third round

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, world number two, on Wednesday advanced to the third round of the women's singles event at the 2,434,389-USD WTA Rogers Cup tournament in Toronto, after defeating Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3 6-4.

Second-seeded Halep, the defending champion, prevailed in an hour and 38 minutes over lucky loser Rybarikova.

Halep, 25, and Rybarikova, 28, world number 33, are now tied 2-2 in their head-to-head records. Rybarikova defeated Simona in the 2011 Hobart in quarter-finals 5-7 7-6 (3) 6-3 and in the 2014 New Haven R16 6-3 4-6 6-3. Halep won once, in the 2013 Moscow R16, after Rybarikova dropped out after the first set (6-2).

Halep has secured 28,030 US dollars and 105 WTA singles points, and she will play Barbora Strycova, 31, world number 26, in the third round. Simona is leading their head-to-head count 3-1, with the latest victory to date in the 2017 Stuttgart R16 6-2 6-3.
