Bucharest, July 15 /Agerpres/ - Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu and his counterpart of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov addressed each other on Saturday congratulations messages on the occasion of celebrating 25 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

According to a Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) release, Romania was one of the first countries to have recognised the independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan, on 17 December 1991, only one day after its proclamation.

The bilateral diplomatic relations were established on 15 July 1992, when, on the sidelines of the official visit of the Romanian Foreign Minister to Kazakhstan, the protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relation between Romania and the Republic of Kazakhstan was signed. Romanias Embassy in Astana was inaugurated in March 1993. The diplomatic mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Bucharest was opened on 11 June 2003, MAE points out.

"In time, the bilateral relation was consolidated through numerous high-level contacts (three visits of Romanias President to the Republic of Kazakhstan and two visits of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Romania), cooperation in a multilateral format (UN, NATO, OSCE, etc.), as well as on a parliamentary and ministerial level. Through its geostrategic position, natural resources and foreign policy, Kazakhstan is a main actor in enlarging the East-West and North-South transport corridors, thus playing an important role in consolidating Europes energy security. Romania is directly interested in the regional evolutions concerning the development of the freight transport routes between Europe and Asia," MAE shows.

At present, Kazakhstan is the most important economic partner of Romania in Central Asia, with prospects of developing this cooperation in multiple areas. On a political level, Romania has always supported Kazakhstan in developing its relations with the European Union, and among the two foreign ministries there are periodical bilateral consultations, the release shows.

"All these create solid prospects for the further development of the political-diplomatic dialogue, on a governmental and parliamentary level, as well as of the Romanian-Kazakh bilateral cooperation in all areas," MAE mentions.
