Bucharest, April 19 /Agerpres/ - The Romanian Film Evenings (Serile Filmului Romanesc - SFR) festival is inviting filmgoers to Iasi, May 10-14, for its 8th edition that will celebrate film director Cristian Mungiu.

Projected in the SFR festival, where more than 60 personalities of the Romanian film industry will be invited, will be 50 productions. It opens on May 10 at the Iasi Athenaeum with a gala that celebrates a decade since Mungiu won the French Cannes Film Festivals Palme dOr for his "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days."

The director comes to SFR to meet fellow set friends and directing colleagues with whom he has collaborated, as well as actors cast in his productions. The festival includes a retrospective of films directed by Mungiu, personally selected by the director "Occident (2002), "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" (2007), "Tales from the Golden Age" 1 and 2 (2009), "Dupa dealuri" (Beyond the Hills) (2012) and "Bacalaureat" (Graduation) (2016).

Included among the special moments of SFR will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of actor Dorel Visan in a short retrospective; birth anniversary of actress Ileana Popovici; opening a section for Romanian childrens films named after renowned director and screenwriter Elisabeta Bostan; celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Padureanca" (The Forest Woman) and a photo exhibition of pictures from the AGERPRES photo archive, which is scheduled to open on May 10 in the presence of AGERPRES Director General Alexandru Giboi.

SFR Director Andrei Giurgia told a presentation news conference on Wednesday that the 8th edition of the festival is a special one thanks to its special guest Cristian Mungiu, who is SFRs 4th guest, after Mircea Daneliuc, George Mihaita and Mircea Diaconu.

SFR will unfold under the attentive care of cultural ambassador Irina - Margareta Nistor, the SFR host for the second consecutive year.

"I have tried to take this story as seriously as possible and try to pitch this festival, which is very near and dear to us and which has created clear dependence, to as many people as possible. I mean all through the year I am being asked Has the festival started yet?, When does the festival start? Well, it starts on May 10 this year, a royal date. Ive said this is a very wonderful coincidence: then years since Palme dOr, and also May 10 [day of Romanias Royalty]; I have been equally very happy to have Cristian Mungiu with us because he hails from Iasi, among other things," said Nistor.

According to organisers, the Iasi Athenaeum, the first official cultural partner of the 8th edition of SFR, has already become the official partner of this years edition of the festival, and its support for Romanias film and filmmaking values will be visible at this special edition as well; many of the events will be hosted by the athenaeums Radu Beligan Grand Hall.

Director of the Iasi Athenaeum Andrei Apreotesei talked about the establishment of the first state cinema hall in Iasi, while actors Adrian Titieni, Tania Popa, Diana Cavallioti and Emanuel Parvu talked about their professional relationship with director Cristian Mungiu.

Actress Ileana Popovici thanked Mungiu beforehand for the event to be dedicated to her, while actress Manuela Harabor voiced hope she will be able to work with Romanias new wave of directors.

AGERPRES Director General Alexandru Giboi said that besides the photo exhibition, AGERPRES will also present two of its own documentary productions "Discover Romania with Peter Hurley" and "The Danube Delta, the Realm between the Waters".

Organised by ARTIS, SFR started as an event of Iasi students who love Romanian films, having managed to turn the city of Iasi in a pole of Romanias filmmaking.
