Bucharest, August 13 /Agerpres/ - Romanian tennis players Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau have won silver in the men's doubles tournament on Friday at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games after being defeated in the final of the tournament by Spaniards Marc Lopez and Rafael Nadal by 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

Mergea and Tecau have brought Romania its first Olympic medal in tennis and with a bit of chance it could've shined greater.

The two Romanians have collapsed at the end of a balanced match that took two hours and 26 minutes and saw many dramatic moments.

In the first set, our representatives led by 1-0 and 2-1, but the Spaniards were more concentrated and made less mistakes, managing to win five games in a row and the set by 6-2.

Mergea and Tecau controlled the second set, in which they led by 1-0 and 2-1, score at which they managed to make a break for 4-1. At 5-2, the Romanians missed two set balls and allowed the Iberian pair to catch up a bit of the difference (5-3). The Romanians managed then to save three break balls and closed the set by 6-3, leveling the set score.

In the decisive set, the Spaniards came out ahead on service, Mergea and Tecau salvaging 5-6 break balls at 2-1 for the opponents. At 2-2 it was Romania's turn to miss out on a break. At 3-3, Mergea and Tecau won a game hands down against the service, but didn't take advantage and the Spaniards managed to recuperate immediately (4-4). After a fruitful service, Lopez and Nadal took advantage of the errors made by the Romanian pair and achieved victory on Tecau's service.

The Romanian pair was supported from the stands by a large part of Romania's delegation, the Romanian women's handball team, the women's table tennis team, the Minister of Youth and Sports Elisabeta Lipa, the Secretary General of the Romanian Olympic and Sporting Committee (COSR) Ioan Dobrescu, the chairman of CSA Steaua Bucharest club George Boroi, etc. The medal ceremony was officiated by the former chairman of the COSR, Octavian Morariu, now a member of the IOC, and former Australian tennis player Mark Woodforde, now a member in the Council of the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Mergea and Tecau scored four aces, but also committed 6 double fouls.

The bronze medals were conquered by the American pair made up by Steve Johnson/Jack Sock, who disposed by 6-2, 6-4 of Canadians Daniel Nestor/Vasek Pospisil.
