Bucharest, Sep 7 /Agerpres/ - The Tribunal of Bucharest placed city's mayor Sorin Oprescu under preventive arrest for 30 days, in a late Sunday night decision in a bribery case prosecuted by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA).
The decision was enforced immediately, but is subject to appeals.
Oprescu was taken in custody on Saturday night, after being caught in the act receiving a bribe of 25,000 euros.
The DNA prosecutors also ordered the police to bust a director of the Bucharest Municipality, Oprescu's former driver and two heads of a cultural centre in charge of historical palaces near the Capital.
Prosecutors searched on Sunday the City Hall, the Cemeteries Administration and Prince Brancoveanu Palaces Cultural Centre.
They allege that an organized group joined by the mayor has set up since 2013 a system to collect some of the gross profit of contracts awarded by local public institutions."The contractors kept 30 percent to 33pct of the gross profit and handed out the rest of it to officials in the municipal administration of Bucharest, as bribes, with 10pct demanded for Oprescu," the DNA explained in a media release. The mayor's subordinates in authority positions within two public institutions arranged the quick acceptance of the documents for awarded contracts and the early payment of invoices, while asking bribes in exchange for the administration heads, including the mayor.
DNA mentioned that Oprescu got 25,000 euros on Saturday under an agreement to get a total of 60,000 euros.AGERPRES
