Suceava, April 17 /Agerpres/ - President of the "Douzelage" European Town Twinning Association Cezary Salomonczyk, of the Polish city of Chojna, said on Friday in Siret, addressing the opening of the 40th edition of the "Douzelage" General Assembly, that it is important to change the attitude of communities towards European issues, bring Europe close to the people and provide mutual assistance.
In Salomonczyk's opinion, it is dangerous to suggest that the EU is only for the "people at the top, for tie-wearers", but also that if someone does not know several languages, is unemployed or hasn't visited at least 12 European capitals, he is not qualified for being a European.
The opinion differences show that even heavyweight members of the European society are sometimes confused. Is the European Union heaven or hell? People are afraid of immigrants from Africa, of the war in Ukraine, or of the decrease in their living standards, and they also have the right to ask themselves questions. And I think that we, at the "Douzelage" Association don't need to convince each other of the importance of the EU project, said Salomonczyk.
"This association is unique in Europe and is recommended by the European institutions as a town twinning model. Moreover, this association is an example for strengthening relations between the European states," said Adrian Popoiu, mayor of the host town of Siret, stressing that this event is an excellent opportunity to promote Siret, Suceava County, but also Romania as a whole.
The 40th edition of the General Assembly of the "Douzelage" Association officially opened on Friday in Siret, Suceava County, as part of the "European Year of Sustainable Development."
Attending the official opening on Friday were the leaders of the "Douzelage" Association, Suceava County prefect Constantin Harasim, and Liberal MP Radu Surugiu.AGERPRES
