While the population and the dwelling census in 2001 reported that Romania numbered 21,680,974 people, according to the provisory statistical data the National Statistics Institute (INS) supplied from the census conducted in Oct 2011 and made public on Thursday this Feb 2, Romania's stable population currently counts 19,042,936 people.
As many as 11,435,080 people used to live in municipalities and/or in towns and cities, while 10,245,894 in villages, in 2002. The provisory data of the last year census say that 10,054,000 of Romania's stable population live in municipalities, towns and cities whilst 8,989,000 live in the countryside.
The 2002 census reported 19,399,597 Romanians and 1,431,807 ethnic Hungarians vs. 16,870,000 Romanians and 1,238,00 ethnic Hungarians, as the 2011 census figures say. AGERPRES
