The AGERPRES National News Agency is the most important source for news and media pictures about Romania and the most trustworthy source of information about Romania on which the national and international print media rely.
The AGERPRES National News Agency is the official "voice" of Romania, running as a public institution of national interest. Its mission is to gather, edit and broadcast in words and pictures information about the latest news in domestic as well as foreign politics, economics, culture and sciences and sports.
Under its statutes, AGERPRES has a main obligation to function outside all ideological, political, religious or economic influences or considerations that might affect the accuracy and objectivity of the information provided. By the content of its services, the agency must also make sure pluralism, free communication of information and unbiased information of the public opinion is firmly secured, and it also has to refrain from broadcasting documents that might harm national security or personal image and dignity.
The annual news flow of the agency comprises, on the average, approximately:

The AGERPRES National News Agency has press offices in all the 41 county seats of Romania and special correspondents attending the most important events in Romania and abroad. The highly-talented 250 brave news staff and photo journalists employed by AGERPRES provide real-time connection to the events occurring in Romania and around the world.
The domestic and foreign news broadcast, as well as the publications and photographs by the AGERPRES National News Agency are carried over by numerous newspapers, radio stations, television channels and websites. SHORT HISTORY
From the first wire news to the multimedia era
The AGERPRES National News Agency is the most prestigious news agency in Romania. Its history starts in 1889. Along the years, it was called the Romanian Telegraph Agency, the Orient-Radio Romanian Telegraph Agency, RADOR in short, the AGERPRES National News Agency, the ROMPRES National News Agency, and from 2008 bearing again the name AGERPRES National News Agency.
The first national and autonomous Romanian news agency established in early 1889 operated under the authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was concerned with "broadcasting abroad news from Romania" as well as with "receiving and broadcast from abroad an accurate and rapid service of all the news stories of general interest or special interest to Romania."
LANDMARKS IN THE HISTORY OF THE AGENCY
January 24/February 5, 1889
Romania's Foreign Minister P.P. Carp asks the General Management of Post and Telegraph Department to offer the emerging Romanian Telegraph Agency "a big room in the buildings they house."
March 15/27, 1889
P.P. Carp signs the birth document of the first news agency of the Romanian State: Romania's Telegraph Agency. The agency was to broadcast abroad news from Romania through the wire system, on a daily basis, and to provide for Romania "an accurate and rapid service of all the news stories of general interest or special interest to the country."
March 30/April 11, 1889
Romania's Telegraph Agency dispatches its first wire news.
June 16, 1921
Orient-Radio (RADOR) anonymous wire news company is established in Bucharest.
May 20, 1949
The AGERPRES Romanian News Agency is creating by restructuring RADOR.
January 8, 1990
A decree is issued regarding the establishment of the ROMPRES National News Agency by the restructuring of AGERPRES.
January 2003
The Law regarding the organisation and functioning of the ROMPRES National News Agency, under which the agency is set to operate under the authority of Parliament, is issued and published.
July 2008
A new law is published modifying the agency's name to AGERPRES National News Agency.

1999
The Web site of ROMPRES is officially launched in May
"Trei zile dintr-un veac. 7-9 mai 1999," (Three Days of a Century. May 7-9, 1999) depicting in words and pictures the visit to Romania of Pope John Paul II at the invitation of Patriarch Teoctist of the Romanian Christian Orthodox Church is released at the Parliament Palace in Bucharest.
2003
The Law regarding the organisation and functioning of the ROMPRES National News Agency, under which the agency is set to operate under the authority of Parliament, is issued and published.
The book "România oi Consiliul Europei" (Romania and the Council of Europe, 1993-2003) is released to celebrate 10 years of Romania's membership of the Council of Europe.
2004
The book "România-NATO 1990-2004" (Romania-NATO 1990-2004) is released to celebrate Romania becoming a full NATO member.
"Ctitorii sub semnul crucii - atefan cel Mare oi Sfânt (Foundations under the Sign of the Holy Cross, St. Stephan the Great) bilingual Romanian-English photo album is released to mark the quintennial of St. Stephan the Great
"UNIUNEA EUROPEANA PE INTELESUL TUTUROR" (European Union for Everybody), the first CD in a series of four educational CDs in Romanian called "ABC-ul Uniunii Europene" (An ABC of the European Union) is released. Next in the series will be how to travel to the EU, how to study in the EU and how to work in the EU.
"UNIUNEA EUROPEANA PE INTELESUL TUTUROR" is awarded the 2004 SIMFEST multimedia festival award for the best multimedia creation.
Photo-document exhibition of the 1989 Romanian Revolution is mounted at the Romanian Information Centre in Brussels.
Photo-document trilingual Romanian-English-French album on the 1989 Romanian Revolution is released.
2005
The new Rompres photo Web site (www.foto.rompres.ro) is launched.
The IT platform for browsing the document base is launched.
The "CUM SA CALATORIM IN UNIUNEA EUROPEANA"(How to Travel to the European Union), the second CD-ROM in the ABC of the European Union series is officially released at the 2005 edition of the Romanian National Press Show.

On March 27, 2009 we celebrate 120 years since the foundation of the first news agency of the Romanian state - 'ROMANIAN AGENCY' - AGERPRES - predecessor of today agency.
AGERPRES Reportaj, editorial products covering issues of wide interest to the Romanian society.
RealTimeMonitoring (ARTM) service, real-time monitoring of over 800 websites and online publications. The service can be configured directly by the client, on subscription, and offers keyword monitoring reports submitted on time intervals and SMS alerts.
Press releases - a new news agency service, disseminated and accessed for free, available around the clock, includes press releases and official announcements from central and local state authorities, political parties, trade unions, employers and public institutions, culture institutions and NGOs. It complements the services offered by the AGERPRES agency and it is a complementary product of the OTS (Original Text Service), where private companies and businesses can make their offerings, actions and views known for a fee, through press releases and notices.
Documentary package 'Retrospectiva anului 2009' (2009 in Retrospect), a 180-page chronology of major political, economic, social, cultural and sporting events from Romania and abroad. Retrospectiva is available in an electronic format in two sections - Domestic (90 pages) and Foreign (90 pages). Reviews of previous years are also available.
Launch in Brussels of the trilingual photo-document album, to commemorate 20 years since the revolution of December 1989 entitled "Romania 20'. This event is followed by a series of exhibitions of photography with the same theme in the country and abroad.
