According to the ministry, the measure is part of the ministry's initiative to transform Lake Vacaresti into a natural protected area, "an area of distinct individuality".

"The Vacaresti Natural Park harbours rich biodiversity. Proof in this sense is the opinion of the Commission for Protecting Natural Monuments of the Romanian Academy who believes that by establishing a natural park type zone could ensure the protection and conservation of the landscape as well as elements of the fauna and flora, given the fact that the plot has a legal status of being buildable. Deemed a genuine wetland in which the avian fauna diversity and that of other types of fauna developed in an urban perimeter without deliberate human intervention, with the aid of underground rivers, the Vacaresti Natural Park ensemble must be preserved and protected as a unique habitat, an oasis of calm and recreation inside a city that is getting more crowded by the minute,' reads a MMSC press release posted on the Ministry's website.

Interested persons can participate in the public debate and share their points of view on the web page of the MMSC.

At the beginning of February this year, the Initiative group for the Vacaresti Natural Park requested that the relevant authorities declare the park a protected area.

According to the quoted source, without clear and firm interventions on behalf of the municipal authorities or the National Environment Guard, Vacaresti Natural Park risks becoming "a veritable dumping ground for the economic operators in the area".

Data put forth by the "Salvati Dunarea si Delta" organisation shows that in the countries in the region, Prague has 88 protected urban areas, Warsaw 13, Belgrade 2, Budapest 5 and Sofia has one natural park.

Bucharest's delta on Lake Vacaresti, also known as the "Delta between the blocks", represents a natural area bordered by Calea Vacaresti, Soseaua Oltenitei, Soseaua Vitan-Barzesti and Splaiul Independentei, the latter spanning the river Dambovita's embankment

Lake Vacaresti was devised by the communist administration as part of a complex redesign of the River Dambovita and was designed to become part of a hydrological defence system to protect Bucharest of flooding. Works began in 1986 but were halted after 1989.

The 200 hectares of vegetation and marshland, fed by underground waters, house various species of fish, wild ducks, geese, lizards and seagulls in a stable ecosystem. AGERPRES
