Deputy Chair of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Corina Cretu said combatting poverty should be Romania's country project.

'Since Romania joined the EU, it has been said that the country no longer has a project for the future. This project exists and it is combatting poverty. (...) Poverty alleviation must be Romania's national project,' Cretu told a conference called 'Social solidarity and opportunities for an inclusive Romania,' organised at the initiative of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament as part of its Relaunching Europe series.

Cretu added that Romania could become, from the viewpoint of the economic growth recorded in 2013, a model for Europe.

'I am positive Romania can become a model for Europe. In a Europe where austerity continues to be the operative word, Romania proves another manner of governing is possible,' she said.

Also participating in the conference was Chairman of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Hannes Swoboda. AGERPRES
