In the weekend the southern part of the Romanian seashore saw the festivity of resuming the Arab horse racing, on the racecourse of the stud farm in Mangalia (south-eastern Romania), ten years after the stop put to the horse racing competitions on this racetrack.

The manager of the Mangalia stud farm, Engineer Istvan Antal, told people attending the festivity that he saw his wish come true: to give back the Mangalia stud farm the brilliance it deserves corresponding to the horse breed that made it famous.

"I do not think that many people know what a treasure we are destined to protect here, at the complex of the Mangalia stud farm, and the stables here continue the national gene bank of Arab horses, the breed whose genes are to be found in all modern breeds of horses the world over,' said Istvan Antal.

According to the manager of the stud farm, 'the Arab horses came to Romania at the same time with the Turkish invasion in the 16th century and were appreciated for their speed and agility, endurance to hard living conditions and prolonged effort. The Arab breed is the oldest breed in the world. Its origin was traced back to 3,500 years ago, in the Nedjed country in Saudi Arabia, an area controlled by the tribe of the Wahabis. ... The Mangalia stud farm was installed in Romania's far south-east for the very climate conditions that resemble the ones in their land of origin.'

The Arab horse is used in numerous crossbreeds in order to create new breeds or to improve them. The best known is the Anglo-Arab horse, with its numerous variants. In Romania they started breeding the Arab horse when the stud farm at Radauti (northern Romania) was set up in 1782. In the Mangalia stud farm, which was set up in 1928, they breed Arab horses which were brought from the stud farms at Jegalia (southern Romania), Cislau (central Romania) and Radauti. Between 1936 and 1941 the stud farm imported new 'lines' of thoroughbreds from Poland. Since 1991 they have imported another three studs from Poland, who helped remove consanguinity.

The heritage of the state-owned stud farm in Mangalia consists of the four classic genetic lines that have been kept since it was founded. They are called: Gazal (Hungarian line), Hadban and Siglavy Bagdady (Radauti) and Mersuch (Hungarian line). In 1936 they imported stud Nedjari (French and Polish lines) and since 1991 they have imported studs Ibn Galal and El Imam (Egyptian lines) and Cygaj (Polish line).

'Thanks to the Mangalia stud farm, to its specific character, genetic nucleus and the number of horses, Romania belongs to the select group of the six European nations that have state-owned stud farms keeping Arab horses (Weil, in Germany, Topolcianki, in Slovakia, Tersk, in the Russian Federation, Ianow Podlaski, in Poland, and Kabiuk Shumen, in Bulgaria), as well as to the seven horse racing destinations worldwide, for the Arab horse races, together with the USA, the Arabian Peninsula, Russia, Poland, France and Turkey,' said manager Istvan Antal.AGERPRES
